What is a peptide?

A peptide is a short chain of amino acids linked together by peptide bonds. Amino acids are the building blocks of all proteins, and when a small number of them (typically between 2 and 50) are joined in a defined sequence, the result is a peptide. Longer chains fold into the complex three-dimensional structures we call proteins.

The specific order of amino acids — the sequence — determines a peptide’s properties. Even a single change in that sequence can alter how a peptide behaves in an experiment, which is why sequence accuracy and purity are so important in research settings.

What does “research peptide” mean?

The term research peptide simply refers to a peptide that is manufactured and supplied for use in scientific research — for example in in vitro studies, assay development, antibody production, or as a reference standard. Research peptides are tools for the laboratory bench; they are not medicines, supplements, or products intended for use in or on humans or animals.

How research peptides differ from proteins and drugs

  • Peptides vs proteins: the distinction is largely one of size. Peptides are short chains; proteins are longer and fold into stable structures. The boundary is approximate, but “peptide” generally implies fewer than about 50 amino acids.
  • Research peptides vs pharmaceuticals: a licensed medicine has been through clinical trials and regulatory approval for a specific use in patients. A research peptide has not. It is an unapproved laboratory chemical and must never be treated as, or used like, a drug.

How research peptides are made

Most research peptides are produced by solid-phase peptide synthesis (SPPS), a technique in which amino acids are added one at a time to a growing chain anchored to a solid resin. After synthesis, the peptide is cleaved from the resin, purified — usually by high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) — and analysed to confirm its identity and purity. The result is then typically freeze-dried (lyophilised) into a stable powder for storage and shipping.

Why quality and purity matter

In research, reproducibility depends on knowing exactly what is in the vial. Two factors are key:

  • Purity — usually verified by HPLC and expressed as a percentage. Higher purity means fewer impurities that could interfere with results.
  • Identity — usually confirmed by mass spectrometry, which checks that the molecular weight matches the intended sequence.
